Description of Major

*Please Note: Face-to-face/in-person instruction of this program is available ONLY at the main campus in Tallahassee, FL. This program is NOT available via Online/Distance Learning.*

The goal of the School of Communication is to provide a broad-based set of intellectual and communication skills which prepare one for a career in the communication field. While some majors are professionally oriented and others stress theory and a liberal education, each gives the student a broad understanding of fundamental communication processes and also provides flexibility to tailor coursework around individual student needs. Advertising students will focus on account management, creative strategy, media planning and research skills.

Note: Specific information related to this interest area is subject to change. Please check with the School of Communication prior to submitting your application.

Requirements

Admission Requirements to the Upper-Division Major:

Three majors in the School of Communication are Specialized Admission/Limited Access programs, restricted by both total numbers of students in each major and minimum grade point average required for application. Each major operates with a different enrollment cap. Achievement of the minimum application GPA does not guarantee admission to a communication major; all admissions are competitive.

Admission criteria are available from the School. An application package must be completed and submitted to the School of Communication, see https://comm-fsu-sm.smapply.us/ .

Minimum requirements for review of application include: an overall GPA of 3.00 on all college coursework attempted; completed application package submitted to the School of Communication on or before December 31st; and transcripts from all colleges and universities attended. Students must have completed 52 hours of college coursework by the end of the semester of application.

Applicants are encouraged to enroll in a foreign language, computing statistics, speaking, and writing courses. Acceptance by a faculty committee will be based on a review of the application and transcript, and other relevant materials in light of the published admissions criteria. By the end of the spring semester in which the students are applying for admission, they must successfully complete two General Education English courses and two General Education math courses as accepted by FSU.

Map General Information

ACADEMIC MAP (Effective Summer 2025 and after)

*Please Note: Face-to-face/in-person instruction of this program is available ONLY at the main campus in Tallahassee, FL. This program is NOT available via Online/Distance Learning.*

This map is a term-by-term sample course schedule. The milestones listed to the right of each term are designed to keep you on course to graduate in four years. The Sample Schedule serves as a general guideline to help you build a full schedule each term. The General Education and Elective courses must be selected to satisfy all area and diversity requirements unless your program meets these requirements with major courses. Milestones are courses and special requirements necessary for timely progress to complete a major. Missing milestones will result in one of two types of map registration stops. The first level (Degree Map Off-track) is placed following grade posting if the student has missed a milestone (course and/or GPA) for the first time in the major. If a student is in non-compliance with milestones for two (2) consecutive semesters (excluding summers), a Major Change Required stop is placed on the student's registration.

The Advertising Major is a Specialized Admission/Limited Access major. Acceptance into the School of Communication is competitive and occurs once a year in the spring semester to begin the following summer or fall semester. For complete information regarding admission requirements and the application, see http://comm.cci.fsu.edu.
