The purpose of the Humanities major is to provide the opportunity for broad experience in the Humanities departments with enough study in one field to prepare for graduate work and to ensure against superficiality. Organization of knowledge along the lines of traditional departments is important, but great benefit may be derived from supplemental study in concentrations such as Classical Civilization, Contemporary Culture, Asian Studies, etc. The program not only gives the student a thorough Liberal Arts background, but also provides a valuable foundation for a variety of professional fields, such as teaching, journalism, law, librarianship, foreign service, the religious professions, music, arts administration, and government service. Furthermore, the Humanities play a fundamental role in medical education, according to the American Association of Medical Colleges.

Requirements for graduation in the College of Arts and Sciences include:
The College of Arts and Science requires proficiency in a foreign language through the intermediate (2220 or equivalent) level or sign language through the advanced (2614 or equivalent) level.
Requirements for Progression to the Upper-Division Major
To be admitted students must complete at least 52 hours of credit with an adjusted GPA of 2.00 on FSU coursework, and at least half the required hours in General Education, including freshman English composition and mathematics, or an AA degree.
Major Program of Studies at FSU: (42 hours; beyond General Education requirements)
42 hours beyond General Education, to be chosen from three approved Humanities departments/areas (listed below). A minimum of twenty-four (24) credit hours must be taken in the major at the 3000/4000 level. These hours will be distributed as follows:
Required Core Humanities Class (3 hours)
One of the following courses:
HUM2210 Humanities: Pre-history to Late Antiquity or
HUM2235 Humanities: From the Renaissance to the Enlightenment or
HUM2250 Humanities: 18th-Century Romanticism to Postmodernism
Group I: Primary Department Requirement (15 hours)
Fifteen (15) hours must be selected from one of the departments/areas listed below:

Asian and Middle Eastern Studies

Group II: Secondary Concentration (12 hours)
Twelve (12) hours must be selected from one of the departments/areas listed above.
The secondary department cannot be the same as the primary department.
Group III: Tertiary Concentration (12 hours)
Twelve (12) hours must be selected from one of the departments/areas listed above.
The tertiary department cannot be the same as the primary or secondary departments.
Upper-level Course Requirement (24 hours)
A minimum of twenty-four (24) hours of course work taken for the major must be numbered above 2999.
Minor: A separate minor is not required.
Digital Literacy: (3 hours)
CGS 2060 (3), CGS 2100 (3), CGS 2518 (3) or other University approved Digital Literacy course
Oral Communication Competency: (0-3 hours)
Students must demonstrate the ability to orally transmit ideas and information clearly. The requirement may be met with an approved college-level course.
Requirements for a Minor in Humanities
No courses taken toward the Minor in Humanities can overlap with any other requirements (exclusive of writing or Diversity "d" classes). The undergraduate minor may be accomplished in one of the two following ways:
1. Fifteen semester hours, of which nine must be taken in one of the Humanities departments listed above, and six from one other Humanities
department from the same list. Six hours must be numbered above 2999.
2. Twelve semester hours in courses offered by the Interdisciplinary Humanities Program.

Mapping is FSU’s academic advising and monitoring system. Academic progress is monitored each Fall and Spring semester to ensure that students are on course to earn their degree in a timely fashion. To graduate on time, you need to make sure you have achieved or surpassed these milestones by the end of each term. The Sample Schedule serves as a general guideline to help you build a full schedule each term and may use categories of courses such as "GE History" for a General Education History course. The General Education and elective courses must be selected to satisfy all area and diversity requirements, unless your program meets these requirements with major courses.
To complete a major in Interdisciplinary Humanities, a student would need 42 hours of coursework beyond General Education requirements, with 24 hours of coursework in classes numbered above 2999. No minor is required. Students should consult Kathryn Stoddard as their advisor regarding major course requirements. All courses taken to fulfill the 42 hours of major course work must be taken for a letter grade. If you are placed above a milestone, it is important that you continue with the next milestone in its place.
