The undergraduate program in Russian and East European Studies is designed for: 1) general education students who wish to learn more about the language, history, culture and the contemporary political and economic setting of a particular country or cultural region within the area of Russia and Eastern Europe: 2) students who wish to pursue graduate work in this field; and 3) students who seek employment in or relating to Russia and Eastern Europe. As this program is interdepartmental in nature, students take courses in anthropology, art, economics, geography, history, humanities, philosophy, political science, religion, sociology and languages.

There is no prerequisite coursework for the major, but students are encouraged to take lower-level introductory courses in some of the related disciplines. Such courses serve as background for the major and may meet prerequisites for more advanced courses in the major. Students are encouraged to begin study in a relevant area language and to take any culture or history courses that relate to Russia and Eastern Europe.
Note: State-wide common prerequisites are always under review. For the most current information and for acceptable alternative courses, visit the “Common Prerequisites Manual.” This is available from the “Student Services” section of http://www.flvc.org .

To encourage the achievement of language proficiency, language coursework hours taken beyond the intermediate level foreign language requirement may be counted towards the required 40 hours for the major.

This map is a term-by-term sample course schedule. The milestones listed to the right of each term are designed to keep you on course to graduate in four years. The Sample Schedule serves as a general guideline to help you build a full schedule each term. The General Education and Elective courses must be selected to satisfy all area and diversity requirements unless your program meets these requirements with major courses. Milestones are courses and special requirements necessary for timely progress to complete a major. Missing milestones will result in one of two types of map registration stops. The first level (Degree Map Off-track) is placed following grade posting if the student has missed a milestone (course and/or GPA) for the first time in the major. If a student is in non-compliance with milestones for two (2) consecutive semesters (excluding summers), a Major Change Required stop is placed on the student's registration.
The Russian Studies major requires 36 hours beyond General Education requirements. A Foreign Language up to the intermediate level is required.
