Mathematics is a vital foundation for science, social science and technology. A student in mathematics can look forward professionally to employment in an industrial or financial firm, a governmental agency, or teaching in secondary, college or university institutions. Alternatively, a degree in the department can be regarded as the central component of a liberal education, either for its own sake or as preparation for professional study in another field. Biomathematics is designed to prepare the student for admission to medical school.

The state of Florida has identified common program prerequisites for this University degree program. Specific prerequisites are required for admission into the upper-division program and must be completed by the student at either a community college or a state university prior to being admitted to this program.
Prerequisite Coursework
Students should complete the following prerequisites as possible during the first two years. Prerequisite courses may be used to fulfill the mathematics and science requirements for Liberal Studies.

*XXX XXXX (4-5) One laboratory based science course designed for science majors, BSCX010/X010L or BSCX010C, CHM X045/X045L or CHMX045C, PHYX048/X048L or PHYX048C, or GLYX010/X010L or GLYX010C (PHY X048C or X048 & X048L is strongly suggested as it is required for the major)
*COP X271C, COP2210, COP2270, COP2272C, COP2001, COP1500, or COP2006 (3) A scientific programming course designed for computer science majors

Requirements for graduation in the College of Arts and Sciences include:
The College of Arts and Science requires proficiency in a foreign language through the intermediate (2220 or equivalent) level or sign language through the advanced (2614 or equivalent) level.
Requirement for Progression to and Continuation in the Upper-Division Major
A final grade of “C minus” or better is required in all courses to be counted toward these degrees. Upon formal admission to the major, a student must not accumulate more than 2 unsatisfactory grades (grades below a "C minus" or grades of "U") in courses required for the major, excluding State Common Program Prerequisites listed as Term 1 - 4 Milestones, taken after enrolling in FSU. For all math majors, collateral courses include COP 3014 or ISC 3313, PHY 2048C, STA 3032. Exceptions to this policy require a petition to the department.
Major Program of Studies at FSU: (36 to 38 hours beyond prerequisites)
Courses at the 4000 level applied toward the degree must be taken at FSU unless specifically exempted by the Chair on written request. A final grade of C minus or higher is required in all courses taken for the major.

MGF 3301 (3) Introduction to Advanced Mathematics
STA 3032 (3) Applied Statistics for Engineers and Scientists or STA 4322 (3) Mathematical Statistics (requires STA 4321)
COP 3014 (3) Programming I or ISC 3313 (3) Introduction to Scientific Computing. (Either will satisfy the Digital Literacy requirement and may also be used to satisfy one of the prerequisite requirements).
PHY 2048C (5) General Physics with Laboratory. This may also apply as prerequisite science.

Three additional courses: (9 hours)
These are to be selected from a list of approved courses. At least two must be at the 4000 level and least one of the following sequences, or an approved substitution, must be completed: MAA 4226-4227 or MAD 3703-4704 or MAP 4341-4342 or MAS 4302-4303 or MTG 4302 and MAA 4402. Consult the department website or a list of approved courses or consult the University Bulletin
Required Minor Coursework: (3-5 hours)
The required collateral courses of PHY 2048C, COP 3014 or ISC 3313, STA 3032, and a State Common Prerequisite science course, chosen from BSC 2010, CHM 1045, GLY 2010, or PHY 2049C, constitute an acceptable interdisciplinary collateral minor for students in this major.
Digital Literacy: (3 hours)
COP 3014 (3) Programming I or ISC 3313 (3) Introduction to Scientific Computing will fulfill the requirement for this major.
Oral Communication Competency: (0-3 hours)
Students must demonstrate the ability to orally transmit ideas and information clearly. This requirement may be met with a University approved college-level course.

Mapping is FSU’s academic advising and monitoring system. Academic progress is monitored each Fall and Spring semester to ensure that students are on course to earn their degree in a timely fashion. This map is a term-by-term sample course schedule. The milestones listed to the right of each term are designed to keep you on course to graduate in four years. The Sample Schedule serves as a general guideline to help you build a full schedule each term. The General Education and Elective courses must be selected to satisfy all area and diversity requirements unless your program meets these requirements with major courses. Milestones are courses and special requirements necessary for timely progress to complete a major. Missing milestones will result in one of two types of map registration stops. The first level (Degree Map Off-track) is placed following grade posting if the student has missed a milestone (course and/or GPA) for the first time in the major. If a student is in non-compliance with milestones for two (2) consecutive semesters (excluding summers), a Major Change Required stop is placed on the student's registration.
The Pure Mathematics major works best if you can start in the highest math for which you have completed the prerequisites. If you start the Pure Math major in a class lower than MAC2311, you should plan on taking math courses over the summer to get back on course to graduate in four years. If you begin FSU with earned credit for College Algebra, you should take MAC1140 and MAC1114 during Term 1.
