ACADEMIC MAP (Effective Summer 2024 and after)

*Please Note: Face-to-face/in-person instruction of this program is available ONLY at the main campus in Tallahassee, FL. This program is NOT available via Online/Distance Learning.*

This map is a term-by-term sample course schedule. The milestones listed to the right of each term are designed to keep you on course to graduate in four years. The Sample Schedule serves as a general guideline to help you build a full schedule each term. The General Education and Elective courses must be selected to satisfy all area and diversity requirements unless your program meets these requirements with major courses. Milestones are courses and special requirements necessary for timely progress to complete a major. Missing milestones will result in one of two types of map registration stops. The first level (Degree Map Off-track) is placed following grade posting if the student has missed a milestone (course and/or GPA) for the first time in the major. If a student is in non-compliance with milestones for two (2) consecutive semesters (excluding summers), a Major Change Required stop is placed on the student's registration.

Emphasis in all courses is on critical thinking and analysis coupled with effective speaking and writing skills. Students who major in Classics regularly pursue careers in business, education, government, law, and other fields that require a broad liberal arts background.

The Law Enforcement Intelligence major prepares students for employment in a wide variety of criminal justice agencies including local, state and Federal jurisdictions, as well as companies within the private sector. This major can also serve as a foundation for graduate study in programs such as law enforcement intelligence, criminology/criminal justice, law, social work, urban planning, and public administration.

The on campus and the online degree programs are tailored to provide the maximum opportunity for the professional practitioner to participate as well as the traditional student. Consequently, the upper-division courses are offered in a five-semester/12 hour model rather than the four-semester/15-hour model. Students, however, may take 15-18 hours per semester if they desire.

After taking two mandatory introductory courses in the field of linguistics (6 credits), students will take one course in each of the following four core areas of linguistics (12 credits): Phonetics/phonology, syntax, psycholinguistics of bilingualism and sociolinguists. The remaining 12 credits will come from elective courses in formal and/or applied linguistics, taught in English, or in another language (Arabic, Chinese, German, Italian, Japanese, Russian, or Spanish), with a few electives in other departments. The specific set of elective courses taken will allow the students to choose between two different majors in linguistics: General Linguistics, which consists of regular courses in linguistics; and Linguistics and Languages, which combines linguistics courses with additional language courses.

Placement tests are available through the FSU Assessment & Testing Facility for French, German and Spanish. Students with prior proficiency in languages other than French, German, and Spanish must consult an advisor in the Department of Modern Languages and Linguistics for proper course placement. If you are placed above a milestone, it is important that you continue with the next milestone in its place. Total hours above 120 vary based on language proficiency level of student.

To be admitted to the Management Information Systems (MIS) major, you must have completed at least 52 hours, have earned a “C minus“ or better in the Admission Prerequisite Courses (CGS2060, CGS2100 or CGS2518, MAC2233, ECO2013, ECO2023, ACG2021, ACG2071 & STA2023), and have the required 2.500 GPA in all prerequisite attempts.

The major focuses on developing technical and managerial competency and specifically deals with effectively utilizing information for operations and organizational decision-making. It includes work in systems analysis, database management, networks, telecommunications, decision support, and expert systems. A special focus on understanding communication and network structure is provided.

Students should complete diversity requirements through their General Education coursework.

Materials chemistry is a branch of materials science that deals with the synthesis of materials and investigation of their reactivity, stability, and structure-property relationships, both from experimental and theoretical perspectives. Thus, chemists provide the central expertise that bridges the design, implementation, optimization, and application of materials. Materials chemistry is interdisciplinary science that spans multiple branches of chemistry, including inorganic, organic, physical, analytical, and theoretical chemistry. Advances and discoveries in materials chemistry support areas of critical national need, such as generation of clean and efficient energy, synthesis of novel polymers and nanomaterials, development of novel superconductors and magnets, and design of bioinspired materials. The department offers instruction leading to the baccalaureate degree in Materials Chemistry for students planning either careers in the chemical industry or graduate work.

The Pure Mathematics major works best if you can start in the highest math for which you have completed the prerequisites. If you start the Pure Math major in a class lower than MAC2311, you should plan on taking math courses over the summer to get back on course to graduate in four years. If you begin FSU with earned credit for College Algebra, you should take MAC1140 and MAC1114 during Term 1.
